Here the past comes alive in magnificent forts and palaces, blushed pink, where once lived the Maharajas. Visit the Maharaja's City Palace, the home of the erstwhile royal family, the Observatory, Hawa Mahal also known as Wind Palace built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh and drive past the old part of Jaipur city. This fascinating city with its romantic charm takes you to an epoch of royalty and tradition and has plenty of forts and monuments that remind you of the ancient glamour, glory and charm of Rajput rulers. Day 04: Jaipur
Jaipur was and still remains the only city in the world symbolising the nine divisions of the universe, through nice rectangular sectors sub-dividing it. It is a royal city and its surroundings are rather like an endless museum. The delightfully laid out gardens and parks, attractive monuments and marvellous heritage hotels, which were once the residence of Maharajas are worthy of admiration. Take an excursion to Amber Fort; add a magical touch to the visit by riding on the back of an elephant from the foot of the hill up to the gates of the fortress in the manner of former kings and queens. Within the complex, Ganesh Pol, an imposing gateway painted with images of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh takes pride of the place. Also a part of the complex is the Diwan-I-Aam (Hall of the Public audience) with its spectacular display of pillars. The typical merging of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles is captured in the Sukh Nivas and Jas Mandir apartments, and the Charbagh garden with its perfectly proportioned landscaping. Beyond the rampants, the old city, once the abode of the aristocracy, has a wonderfully medieval flavour, though it has few buildings of majestic proportion that are still extant. Afternoon is at leisure with an overnight stay in Jaipur. (B,D)
Day 05: Jaipur - Fatehpur Sikri Agra (Driving Time: Approx 6 hours)
As the tour progresses, today we travel to Agra en-route visiting Fatehpur Sikri, also known as the abandoned city of Mughals built by Emperor Akbar in 1569. The city was intended to embody the noble ideas and the humanitarian bent of this dynamic Emperor. He had planned this city as his capital but shortage of water compelled him to abandon the city. This deserted city has retained many of the old structures, and is one of the finest examples of Mughal architectural splendour at its height. It is prolific and versatile Indo-Muslim composite style, which is a fusion of the composite cultures of indigenous and foreign origins. The entire city of Fatehpur Sikri has been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Enjoy guided sightseeing tour and interesting birth story of this beautiful city. Rest of the afternoon is kept free for your own activities and stay overnight in Agra. (B,D)
Day 06: Agra - Delhi Departure (Driving Time: Approx 5 hours)
Pay a sunrise visit to the immortal Taj Mahal, the inimitable poem in white marble is the first expression of love of an Emperor Shahjahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond any adequate description. The Taj rises on a high red sandstone base topped by a huge white marble terrace on which rests the famous dome flanked by four tapering minarets. Within the dome lies the jewel-inlaid cenotaph of the queen. Standing in the centre of a luxurious Persian garden, it is an architectural jewel of its time, with its unparalleled glory and exquisiteness surpassing beyond all human imaginations. Also visit Agra Fort; the imposing structure on the banks of the river Yamuna is replete with priceless examples of craftsmanship in the Mughal period. It blends the Hindu and central Asian architectural styles very beautifully. Built by Emperor Akbar the maze of courtyards, mosques and private chambers of the fort, echo the story of the Mughal Empire. Travel back to Delhi airport to board your onward fight. (B)
